V79 cell line was derived from the lung tissue of a female Chinese hamster, originally named V cell line; in 1958, Elkind renamed it V79 and used it to study X-ray-induced damage and repair in mammalian cells in culture. V79 cells express negative immunoglobulin products and are negative for Epstein-Barr virus expression; they express Fas antigen and are sensitive to TNF and anti-Fas antibodies.
