C2C12 cell line is a subclone of a mouse myoblast cell line established by D. Yaffe and O. Saxel; this cell line differentiate rapidly, forming contractile myotubes and producing characteristic myosin. Treating C2C12 cells with bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP-2) leads to a switch in the differentiation pathway of C2C12 cells from myoblasts to osteoblasts. Tests have shown that C2C12 cells are negative for limb girdle developmental malformation virus (murine pox).
