DU 145 cell line was established from a brain metastatic lesion of a prostate cancer patient with a 3-year history of lymphocytic leukemia. DU 145 cells and cells isolated from soft agar do not exhibit detectable hormone sensitivity, and are weakly positive for acid phosphatase. Submicroscopic structural analysis of DU 145 cells and the original tumor cells reveals microvilli, microfilaments, and cell desmosomes, with numerous mitochondria, well-developed Golgi complexes, and heterogenous lysosomes. DU 145 cells do not express prostate antibodies.
