SK-MEL-1 cell line was established by Oettgen·F and his colleagues from the thoracic duct of a 29-year-old Caucasian male patient with extensive and rapidly progressive malignant melanoma. SK-MEL-1 cells are capable of producing melanin, and electron microscopy examination revealed pigment granules in SK-MEL-1 cells that are associated with their own synthesis and phagocytosis. Antibodies targeting SK-MEL-1 cells have been detected in 63% of patients with malignant melanoma and 10% of patients with other diseases.
