HL-60 cell line is a strain of promyeloid cells; it originated from a 36-year-old Caucasian female with acute myelomonocytic leukemia. HL-60 cells undergo spontaneous differentiation, and differentiation can be promoted by butyrate, hypoxanthine, phorbol, myristate, DMSO (1%-1.5%), actinomycin D, and retinoic acid. HL-60 cells exhibit phagocytic activity and respond to chemotactic stimuli; they also express the oncogene myc positively.
