U-2 OS cell line was established in 1964 by Ponten·J and Saksela·E from a moderately differentiated sarcoma of the tibia in a 15-year-old girl. No viruses were detected in U-2 OS cells co-cultured with WI-38 cells or using complement fixation tests (CF method) against simian vacuolating virus SV40, respiratory syncytial virus RSV, or adenovirus. U-2 OS cells express insulin-like growth factor I and II (IGF-I, IGF-II) receptors and osteosarcoma-derived growth factor (*ODGF).
